Carambolim Lake

Carambolim Lake is situated approximately two kilometers southeast of Old Goa in the Tiswadi taluka.It supports a large population of birds like egrets, ospreys, eagles and kingfishers. Carambolim Lake is a man made freshwater lake that was originally built to facilitate irrigation of the nearby fields. The lake is a bird-watcher's paradise since a variety of migratory birds visit this lake every year.
This picture is captured on MOTO E4 during the rainy season.The level of the lake is determined not only by the rains, but also by the local community.It is used as a reservoir for the paddy fields to the south of it. During, late February and March the water leves in the lake are low and it looks like a large green lawn. The plants which are growing very fast is a threat to the lake. In the morning the east site of the lake is best for birdwatching. There is a footpath here and some wonderful big trees providing ample shade.The embankment to the south provides a good view. Carambolim Lake is a famous bird watching spot in Goa where one can see a lot of species of migratory birds as well as a lot of water birds. The ten most abundantly found birds at Carambolim Lake are the Pintal, Lesser Whistling Teal, Cattle Egret, Pond Heron, Purple Moorhen, Red Rumped Swallow, Little Egret, Bronze Winged Jacana, Pheasant Tailed Jacana and the Coot.

Amazing Birdwatching

This place is incredible to spot a good variety of birds. Many of them like the Whistling Ducks and Purple Swamphens will come very close to the promenade, a decent pair of binoculars allows you to see those further out in the lake including some unusual species. When you approach from the railway bridge walk along taking note both sides of the road. The left is the lake, the right has farmland down the slope and you will spot interesting birds glimpsed through the trees. At the end of the straight you can circle round to the left and there is a good path through woodland at the edge of the lake and this area is now a bird reserve with some platforms you can use as a vantage point. you will also see interesting species in the woodland there - we saw a mongoose too.
If you work your way round to the right at the end of the straight - going through the narrow village streets there is a way down onto a path through wetlands and yet more different habitat that the birds love. Well worth a visit.
